The perseverance to overcome diseases is from the mind, but his mind has problem, so we can image how hard for him to recovery from schizophrenia without the medicine. One should never stop wishing, hoping and praying for healing. That’s the message I think the movie want to tell us.

　　The beautiful mind is the strong mind, the mind full of hope. Another reason that Nash could recovery is the supports from his wife. We always heard the news that a vegetable was wake up in the love shining. And I think it’s similar that Nash keeps hope because of his wife’s love. An old saying goes “Being deeply loved by someone gives you strength. Loving someone deeply gives you courage”. The beautiful mind also refers to the mind of his wife, the mind full of love. Not only the struggle Nash had made but also the true love between Nash and his wife did bring us to tears. The most touching part of the film is the end when Nash posted the speech. He found that only in the equation of love, can real logic be found. I think the conclusion is not from his study but from his magical experience.

He doesnt really fit in with the other students though, and he has no interest in actually going to classes. He just wants to find a truly original theory, to think of something that will matter. Something that will make him matter. He does calculate some brilliant stuff, which opens up opportunities for him, all the way to a code breaking gig at the Pentagon, but something is tearing him loose : schizophrenia. Combined with Cold War-era conspiracy theories paranoia, this might make him go totally insane. All hes got left is his caring wife Alicia (Jennifer Connelly), and even she is tempted to give up on him.

　　Its taken me a while to process my feelings on Ron Howards latest film, as theyre kind of confused. In short, I thought the first act was mediocre, then the film did something I perceived as a cheat, but finally it redeemed itself in its powerful last hour. So how am I supposed to review the whole film, as I found its first half to be generic and maudlin, but by the end I was moved to tears? Well, lets start at the beginning, or the "Good Will Hunting" part. These early scenes arent that bad, theyre just bland and harmless. Nash is somehow interesting already, with subtle hints of personality troubles, but hes surrounded by walking clichés, like the snobbish daddys boy (Josh Lucas), the wisecracking buddies, the kind old teacher, or a newer obligatory staple (see also : "Notting Hill", "Undeclared"), the quirky British roommate (Paul Bettany). Plus, its all so timid, a little joke here, a little touching moment there. Yawn.

　　Another thing that bothered me was the seemingly random, unnatural pacing. Its the first day of the semester, then wham!, its six months down the line, boom!, Nashs made his discovery, watch out! Its now five years later and hes called in to break some Soviet code. It gets even more frustrating when Nash starts teaching and Alicia, whos his student, catches his eye. It literally goes from whats your name to I find you attractive to will you marry me? to youre pregnant?! Meanwhile, Nash, is recruited by a Secretary of Defence agent (Ed Harris) who wants him to peruse periodicals to look for secret Communist codes. Come again? Thats not all, theres tense dropouts, mysterious men in black, chases, shoot-outs. It makes little sense, and its hardly all that interesting. I was ready to pan the film.

　　Oh, but wait a second there, thats only the first hour or so of the film, before what I called the big cheat. Dont worry, Im not gonna spoil it. Lets just say that the film reveals that it isnt really concerned with code cracking or Nash love life; "A Beautiful Mind" is ultimately about one mans struggle to retain his sanity, to sort out his mind at once capable of genius and madness. Once the narrative settles on this, the film becomes more and more engrossing. It remains conventional in form as Ron Howard, hardly a daring filmmaker, cant help but go for melodrama and little bittersweet comic beats, or something as predictable and schmaltzy as the "pen scene". But the screenplay by Akiva Goldsman, adapting the Sylvia Nasar novel, presents us with a very interesting, complex character who hits bottom, degrading into the kind of fidgety old weirdo kids mock on the street. This makes his eventual getting back on his feet oh so touching, and I dont think there was a dry eye in the room during the final scene.

　　It takes many people to make a film, and its usually unfair to single out an individual as being most responsible for its success, but in this particular case, I feel its obvious that this is Russell Crowes movie. Writer Goldsman did, after all, commit "Batman & Robin", and as mentioned, Howard has a tendency to lay things too thick, overdoing each moment as if hes trying to show off to the Academy (but oooooooh, thats not his intent, natch). Fortunately, hes at least made one brilliant decision in casting Russell Crowe, who brings depth, pathos and humanity to his character. We see him age nearly fifty years in the film, and I was never thinking make-up, Crowe just seemed older in the way he held himself, spoke and appeared altogether. Likewise, with his schizophrenic behaviour, Crowe is not one to chew scenery and go over the top. This is a performance full of nuances and rough corners. His relationship with Paul Bettany and Ed Harris characters lingers hauntingly in our minds, and even though its underwritten, his screwed up romance with Jennifer Connelly is affecting. She herself is pretty good (and gorgeous), despite a false-sounding shrieking breakdown scene.

　　Overall, Id pretty much recommend "A Beautiful Mind". There are quite a bit of things to dislike in what can be summed up as a tearjerker posing as a psychological thriller, but ultimately it did surprise me by making me cry, and Crowes performance alone is worth the admission price. If he hadnt won the Best Actor Oscar last year, Id say hes sure to get it now, and the movie itself will probably get noticed here and there as a reaction. Check it out.

　　Indeed he does so, early on, in Game Theory -- his brilliant analysis of situational strategies in which the outcome of ones choice of action hinges on the actions of others. Nashs mathematics of competition had applications to business, war and biology (among many other arenas) and boldly contradicted the long-accepted economic doctrines of Adam Smith. But Nash himself would not be able to refine and develop it.

　　Moving from Princeton to MIT at the peak of the Cold War, Nash is recruited by a shadowy Defense Department operative (Ed Harris) for top-secret work as a code-breaker -- and becomes increasingly consumed and frightened thereby. He is forbidden to confide even in his wonderful student-turned-wife Alicia (Jennifer Connelly). The secrecy and danger mount. So do his insanely complex cryptological formulas. He gets weirder and weirder by the day, and finally lost in delusions -- his genius undermined by paranoid schizophrenia.

　　Its a disease thought to be incurable as well as degenerative in the 1950s, but he decides to fight it. Victory wont come for 30 years -- in the form of the 1994 Nobel Prize.

　　Director Ron Howard ("Splash," "Cocoon," "Parenthood," "Far and Away," "Apollo 13") is getting better and better. This time around, he is greatly aided by Akiva Goldsmans script (based on Sylvia Nasars biography of Nash), full of as much trickery as artistry in the subtle depiction of dubious characters.

　　Crowe ("L.A. Confidential," "The Insider") was cast in this film before, not after, "Gladiator," in which -- Im sorry -- he struck me as looking, sounding and acting like a nouveau Richard Burton, so monochromatic in such a self-important toga epic no less ponderous than "The Robe" or "Cleopatra" or Charlton Hestons biblical forays. But he has a rare quality of seeming not to be aware of (or playing to) the camera, and hes quite wonderful here.

　　In the tradition of "Charly" and "Shine," this is a story about surviving mental illness and -- more specifically -- its pain and family impact. To survive is heroic enough. But to survive and go on to achieve -- and to achieve such heights!

　　From a production standpoint,special note must be given to the makeup department,which ages Russell Crowe so magnificently.As the movie progresses through four decades,Nash is realistically depicted and aged appropriately.Likewise,the art department does a fine job rendering four different periods,matching costumes,props and sets to the times.

　　Yet,with all the fine production values,this film excels most in the acting.Russell Crowe turns in a career performance in a career abundant in great performances.This character is the antithesis of the Russell Crowe weve come to expect.Instead of strong,tough and balanced,with a sharp worldly intelligence,he plays an eccentric and convoluted man with quirks,nervous habits and a psyche obviously out of balance.Crowe completely immerses himself in the enormous volume of the role,effortlessly moving between its elements from audacity to paranoia to tenderness to genius.This is an accomplishment that is light years beyond his Academy Award performance in `Gladiator,good as it was.

He turns in a chunky, twitchy performance which, though not on a par with his more subtle turn in The Insider, is admirable. He is complemented by a less flashy, underwritten turn from Jennifer Connelly.

　　Princeton, 1947. Awkward but arrogant John Nash arrives on a maths scholarship, determined to come up with an original idea. Not bothering with classes, he obsessively writes theorem (plotting the movements of pigeons, for example). His only friend is raffish roommate Charles (Bettany), a rich source of wisecracks - “Officer, I saw the driver who hit me - his name was Johnny Walker” - and moral support. Eventually Nash comes up with a revolutionary paper that wins him a position at MIT. Its here that his eccentricities give way to madness.
