“Your money or your life.” The choice traditionally presented by the highwayman is supposed to have only one sensible answer. Money is, after all, no use to a corpse. Yet economists often study something rather like the highwayman's offer in an attempt to uncover the answer to an important question: how much is your life actually worth?
Like many awkward questions, this is one that has to be answered. Safety regulations save lives but also raise the cost of doing business, a cost we all pay through higher prices. Are they worth it? Our taxes pay for life-saving spending on road safety and fire fighting. Are they high enough, or too high?
So how much are we willing to spend to save a life? A traditional planner's approach used to be to measure the value of wages lost due to death or injury. That's dreadful: it confuses what I think my life is worth with what my boss thinks my life is worth.
So an alternative is to ask people how much they would pay for a safer car or kitchen cleaner. But such surveys do not always produce sensible results. Our answers depend on whether we're being offered a safer ?10 household cleaner and then asked if we want the more dangerous ?5 version, or whether we're offered the ?5 brand and then asked if we'll pay ?10 for the safer product. People often answer ”no” to both questions, contradicting themselves. These inconsistencies mean that we're either irrational or lying to pollsters, and perhaps both.

Jaime Escalante was a teacher from Bolivia.He arrived in Los Angeles in 1963.He was thirty-three years old and spoke almost no English.
Life was difficult for Escalante in the United States.He could not be a teacher in California.He had to go to college again.It took him many years,but he did it.He worked at a restaurant to support his family at the same time.Finally,when he was forty-three he started to work at Garfield High School in Los Angeles.This school had a bad name.There were many gangs and the students were not doing well.Soon Escalante changed things.
Escalante worked with his students.He taught them math.He used his own methods,and they worked.The students learned and enjoyed their math.In 1982,fourteen of his students passed an advanced math examination.Nobody believed this.
People said the students were cheating.The students wanted to show they were not cheating.They took the exam again.And they passed again.This was a miracle in a place like Garfield!This was the work of Jaime Escalante.
Every year Escalante produced top class students.People know him as one of the best teachers in America.There is even a movie and a book about him.

內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)單化是考生在構(gòu)思英語(yǔ)四六級(jí)作文時(shí)應(yīng)遵循的原則。考生不論是在練習(xí)時(shí)還是在考場(chǎng)上都應(yīng)當(dāng)牢記這一點(diǎn)。許多考生在作文上敗下陣來(lái)就是因?yàn)榛ㄙM(fèi)了大量的時(shí)間和精力追求內(nèi)容的新穎別致。國(guó)家考試中心在出作文試題時(shí)特別注意選擇一些彈性不是很大的題目,因?yàn)榭荚囎鳛橐环N語(yǔ)言測(cè)試方式,其重點(diǎn)在于測(cè)試考生英語(yǔ)語(yǔ)言水平,它不像出國(guó)英語(yǔ)考試,譬如托福、GMAT和GRE這類智商型考試那樣測(cè)試考生邏輯思辯的能力;如果設(shè)置彈性較大的題目,評(píng)卷人在評(píng)分時(shí)就不容易把握。

二、結(jié)構(gòu)模式化
高分作文的第二大策略是結(jié)構(gòu)模式化,這也是最核心的一條策略。通覽以往的考試作文考題,細(xì)心的考生不難發(fā)現(xiàn),四六級(jí)作文考題不僅題目彈性很小,而且題型相結(jié)穩(wěn)定,這就為考生在短期內(nèi)提高作文分?jǐn)?shù)創(chuàng)造了一個(gè)條件,使考生完全可以在考前針對(duì)考試中可能出現(xiàn)的題型按照固定的結(jié)構(gòu)模式進(jìn)行訓(xùn)練。
三、語(yǔ)言要包裝
做到內(nèi)容簡(jiǎn)單化和結(jié)構(gòu)模式化,考生就已經(jīng)向高分作文的目標(biāo)邁進(jìn)了一大步,如果考生還能在語(yǔ)言的細(xì)節(jié)上下一些功夫,作文的分?jǐn)?shù)就會(huì)更上一層樓,這也就是我們接下來(lái)要談的第三大策略:語(yǔ)言要包裝。前面我們已經(jīng)說(shuō)過(guò),專業(yè)英語(yǔ)作文的測(cè)試重點(diǎn)是考生的語(yǔ)言能力,因而在語(yǔ)言細(xì)節(jié)上下一點(diǎn)功夫就可以讓考生展示自己的語(yǔ)言修養(yǎng)。
作文中語(yǔ)言的包裝主要應(yīng)從以下六點(diǎn)入手。
首先是語(yǔ)法方面的包裝。考生要注意在作文中選取一個(gè)中心時(shí)態(tài),通常選取一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)即可,但在陳述具體例證時(shí)要根據(jù)不同的情況變換時(shí)態(tài)。大綱明確要求高分作文的句子要做到多樣化,所以最好不要全盤使用簡(jiǎn)單句,這樣會(huì)降低文章的層次、復(fù)雜句和簡(jiǎn)單句應(yīng)在文章中交叉出現(xiàn),而對(duì)一些描述性的例證以及臨時(shí)想起的內(nèi)容可以使用簡(jiǎn)單句。
詞匯的包裝是個(gè)較為艱巨的過(guò)程,但單從應(yīng)試的角度而言,考生可以精選一些高分作文學(xué)習(xí),吸取其中的語(yǔ)言營(yíng)養(yǎng),對(duì)其中的用詞進(jìn)行細(xì)致的研究和模仿,在練習(xí)時(shí)盡量使用范文中一些常用的優(yōu)秀詞匯。
同樣在引用名人名言時(shí)考生也要特別注意:中國(guó)人習(xí)慣用別人說(shuō)的話來(lái)證明自己的觀點(diǎn),而西方人引用名人名言通常都是為了進(jìn)行批判性分析,這也是東西方文化上的一大差異,建議考生心意一不要使用名人名言,而應(yīng)當(dāng)用自己的邏輯去說(shuō)服對(duì)方。
說(shuō)到這里自然就引出五一個(gè)語(yǔ)言包裝的問(wèn)題:應(yīng)不應(yīng)當(dāng)在作文中作用諺語(yǔ),大多數(shù)考生會(huì)覺(jué)得這些語(yǔ)言對(duì)評(píng)卷人而言已是陳詞濫調(diào),不應(yīng)該在他們面前賣弄,事實(shí)恰恰相反,非英語(yǔ)國(guó)家的考生使用諺語(yǔ)常常會(huì)給英語(yǔ)國(guó)家的評(píng)卷人留下良好的印象,他們認(rèn)為只有英語(yǔ)功底很扎實(shí)的考生才能正確地使用諺語(yǔ)。因此,在對(duì)所用表達(dá)法把握很大的情況下,考生不妨在作文中寫(xiě)一些地道的英語(yǔ)習(xí)語(yǔ)。
