Lego, the inventor of those colorful bricks that have inspired kids‘ imagination worldwide, has celebrated its 53rd anniversary.
In 1958,a man named Godtfred created the plastic building bricks that can now be found in almost every child‘s toy box. The simple building block has become one of the most well-known and popular toys around the world.
“The Lego brick continues to be very attractive, because it allows children, and others,to develop their creativity and imagination,” said Charlotte Simonsen,a spokeswoman of Lego.
The company‘s building brick allows an endless number of links. With just two bricks there are 24 different links, and with six, there are 915 million possibilities, according to Lego.
A half century after its creation, more than 400 million children and adults spend five billion hours a year putting the bricks together and pulling them apart. Also, the bricks made today can still link with those made in 1958.
Lego bricks aren‘t just child‘s play: they also attract the interest of adults. South Korean adventurer,Heo Young Ho,who climbed Mount Everest in 1987,left a Lego toy behind in the snow during his climb.
After its great success Lego experienced a serious crisis(危機(jī))at the end of the 1990s,hit hard by competition from electronic games. Lego then suffered a dark period that lasted several years.
With great efforts, the company began to be popular again, and in 2006 it earned about 1.5 billion dollars in 130 countries. Seven boxes of Lego are now sold every second around the world, and 19 billion bricks are produced each year: enough to encircle the Earth five times!

There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy and the other becomes unhappy. This arises from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine and the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their remarks, they sour the pleasure of society, hurt many people, and make themselves disagreeable everywhere. If this turn of mind was founded in nature, such unhappy persons would be the more to be pitied. The intention of criticizing(批評(píng)) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its possessors. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people hurt many others; nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This frequently puts them in bad temper and draws them into arguments. If they aim at getting some advantages in social position or fortune, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step or speak a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections, no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrongdoings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact(接觸) with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
71. People who are unhappy _______.
A. always consider things differently from others
B. always discover the unpleasant side of certain things
C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
D. usually are affected by the results of certain things
72. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “_______”.
A. make others unhappy B. have a good taste with social life
C. tend to scold(責(zé)罵) others openly D. enjoy the pleasure of life
73. We can conclude from the passage that _______.
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
C. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
D. unhappy people can not understand happy persons
74. If such unhappy persons insist on keeping the habit, the author suggests that people should _______.
A. show no respect and politeness to them
B. prevent any communication with them
C. persuade them to recognize the bad effects
D. quarrel with them until they realize the mistakes
75. In this passage, the writer mainly _______.
A. describes two types of people
B. laughs at the unhappy people
C. suggests the unhappy people should get rid of the habits of unhappiness
D. tells people how to be happy in life

[1] Swimming is one of those activities that can be learned early in life. Little children can learn to swim as soon as they walk. In fact, you need the same skills in walking as in swimming. However, I believe that five is the best age to learn. By five or six, a child knows fear of water, a very important thing to know. It’s wise to be afraid, to recognize true danger. Young ones understand that the water can sometimes be very dangerous.
[2] To really benefit from swimming, every swimmer should learn_______:butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke, and crawl. I feel that one of these—the breaststroke—is different from the others, since some young swimmers use this stroke naturally, without any training.
[3] In swimming, there are certain rules every swimmer should follow:
[4] Never swim alone! No matter how good you are in the water, don’t risk drowning by swimming alone. If you swim by yourself, with no life guards or friends with you, you may get into trouble.
[5] Don’t go beyond your abilities. Most swimmers know enough not to swim too far from the bank or the beach. Showing off by doing dangerous tricks is no good. Swim safely and you will continue to swim and alive.
[6] Don’t smoke. Swimming depends on a healthy body; good lungs are part of it.
[7] Work at any activity that builds muscles.

Wang Bing’s father began smoking when he was in college. His friend passed him his first cigarette(香煙). He has now been smoking for more than 30 years. It’s an example of how young people are introduced to cigarettes, except that nowadays smokers develop their habit at an even younger age.It has become a main worry in China that many teenagers begin to smoke. A showed that 22.5 % of the middle school students questioned had tried smoking and 15.8% of them smoked regularly(經(jīng)常).For many teenagers, smoking is a symbol of being an adult, matiirity (成熟) and attractiveness because the images who they love best often smoke on screen.
The social environment also plays an important role in attracting(吸引)teenagers,to smoking. They are used to seeing their elders, especially male (男性)family members, smoking at home. Many of them imitate adult behavior and become new smokers.
To increase the price of cigarettes is a useful way to reduce the number of young smokers,as teenagers have no enough money to spend on them.
Another way is to teach the teenagers to refuse cigarettes. A survey shows that 92.5% of the students know smoking will be bad for their health. If we tell them,in a proper way, most of them may give up smoking.
All in all,the society, the government, the school and the family should join together to take the responsibility(責(zé)任)for an anti-smoking(禁煙)act aimed at teenagers, not just to put empty words and warnings on cigarette packs.

A new study finds that plants communicate with one another to warn of danger.
We often consider plants as the furniture of the natural world. They don’t move; they don’t make sounds;they don’t seem to act on anything. But as is often the case, plants talk to each other all the time. And the language is a chemical (化學(xué)物質(zhì)).
Over the years, scientists have reported that different types of plants, from trees to tomatoes, give out chemicals into the air to help neighbouring plants. These chemical warnings can spread information about one plant’s disease or infestation (蟲害),so other plants can protect themselves. But how plants receive and act on the information exactly is still mysterious (神秘的).
In this week’s Science Magazine, researchers in Japan offered some explanations. They have found out one chemical message and traced it all the way from beginning to end.
The scientists looked at tomato plants infested by a common pest (害蟲).To start out, they grew plants in two separate plastic spaces connected by a tube (管子). One plant was infested and placed upwind and the other was uninfested and placed downwind. The downwind plants were later exposed (暴露的)to the pest. The results showed that plants near sick neighbours before were able to protect themselves better against the pest.
They found one chemical appeared more often in the exposed plants. The chemical is called HexVic. The scientists discovered where HexVic came from, and put it over healthy plants. Those plants were then able to produce HexVic. Researchers made sure that uninfested plants could fight off bugs and diseases. How do they know when to protect themselves? They are warned first by their friendly plant neighbours.
It is not a simple story, and it may be happening in many other plants besides tomatoes. It may also be happening with more chemical signals that are still unknown to us. In a word,we know that plants not only communicate, but also look out for one another.
( )57. The underlined word “traced” in the fourth paragraph probably means _______here.
A. reported B. followed C. doubted D. developed

A.③①②④ B.①④③② C.④①②③ D.④②①③

In 1916, two girls of wealthy families, best friends from Auburn, N. Y.—Dorothy Woodruff and Rosamond Underwood—traveled to a settlement in the Rocky Mountains to teach in a one-room schoolhouse. The girls had gone to Smith College. They wore expensive clothes. So for them to move to Elkhead, Colo. to instruct the children whose shoes were held together with string was a surprise. Their stay in Elkhead is the subject of Nothing Daunted: The Unexpected Education of Two Society Girls in the West by Dorothy Wickenden, who is a magazine editor and Dorothy Woodruffs granddaughter.
Why did they go then? Well, they wanted to do something useful. Soon, however, they realized what they had undertaken.
They moved in with a local family, the Harrisons, and, like them, had little privacy, rare baths, and a blanket of snow on their quilt when they woke up in the morning. Some mornings, Rosamond and Dorothy would arrive at the schoolhouse to find the children weeping from the cold. In spring, the snow was replaced by mud over ice.
In Wickendens book, she expanded on the history of the West and also on feminism, which of course influenced the girls decision to go to Elkhead. A hair-raising section concerns the building of the railroads, which entailed(牽涉)drilling through the Rockies, often in blinding snowstorms. The book ends with Rosamond and Dorothys return to Auburn.
Wickenden is a very good storyteller. The sweep of the land and the stoicism(堅(jiān)忍)of the people move her to some beautiful writing. Here is a picture of Dorothy Woodruff, on her horse, looking down from a hill top: "When the sun slipped behind the mountains, it shed a rosy glow all around them. Then a full moon rose. The snow was marked only by small animals: foxes, coyotes, mice, and varying hares, which turned white in the winter."
24. Why did Dorothy and Rosamond go to the Rocky Mountains?
A. To teach in a school. B. To study American history.
C. To write a book. D. To do sightseeing.
25. What can we learn about the girls from paragraph 3?
A. They enjoyed much respect. B. They had a room with a bathtub.
C. They lived with the local kids. D. They suffered severe hardships.
26. Which part of Wickendens writing is hair-raising?
A. The extreme climate of Auburn. B. The living conditions in Elkhead.
C. The railroad building in the Rockies. D. The natural beauty of the West.
27. What is the text?
A. A news report. B. A book review. C. A childrens story. D. A diary entry.

Can a small group of drones(無人機(jī))guarantee the safety and reliability of railways and, at the same time, help railway operators save billions of euros each year? That is the very likely future of applying todays "eyes in the sky" technology to making sure that the millions of kilometres of rail tracks and infrastructure(基礎(chǔ)設(shè)施)worldwide are safe for trains on a 24/7 basis.
Drones are already being used to examine high-tension electrical lines. They could do precisely the same thing to inspect railway lines and other vital aspects of rail infrastructure such as the correct position of railway tracks and switching points. The more regularly they can be inspected, the more railway safety, reliability and on-time performance will be improved. Costs would be cut and operations would be more efficient(高效)across the board.
That includes huge savings in maintenance costs and better protection of railway personnel safety. It is calculated that European railways alone spend approximately 20 billion euros a year on maintenance, including sending maintenance staff, often at night, to inspect and repair the rail infrastructure. That can be dangerous work that could be avoided with drones assisting the crews efforts.
By using the latest technologies, drones could also start providing higher-value services for railways, detecting faults in the rail or switches, before they can cause any safety problems. To perform these tasks, drones for rail dont need to be flying overhead. Engineers are now working on a new concept: the rail drones of the future. They will be moving on the track ahead of the train, and programmed to run autonomously. Very small drones with advanced sensors and AI and travelling ahead of the train could guide it like a co-pilot. With their ability to see ahead, they could signal any problem, so that fast-moving trains would be able to react in time.
28. What makes the application of drones to rail lines possible?
A. The use of drones in checking on power lines. B. Drones ability to work at high altitudes.
C. The reduction of cost in designing drones. D. Drones reliable performance in remote areas.
29. What does "maintenance" underlined in paragraph 3 refer to?
A. Personnel safety. B. Assistance from drones.
C. Inspection and repair. D. Construction of infrastructure.
30. What function is expected of the rail drones?
A. To provide early warning. B. To make trains run automatically.
C. To earn profits for the crews. D. To accelerate transportation.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text?
A. What Faults Can Be Detected with Drones
B. How Production of Drones Can Be Expanded
C. What Difficulty Drone Development Will Face
D. How Drones Will Change the Future of Railways
D
The Governments sugar tax on soft drinks has brought in half as much money as Ministers first predicted it would generate, the first official data on the policy has shown.
First announced in April, 2016, the tax which applies to soft drinks containing more than 5g of sugar per 100ml, was introduced to help reduce childhood obesity(肥胖). It is believed that todays children and teenagers are consuming three times the recommended level of sugar, putting them at a higher risk of the disease.
Initially the sugar tax was expected to make £520m a year for the Treasury. However, data of the first six months showed it would make less than half this amount. At present it is expected to generate £240m for the year ending in April 2019, which will go to school sports.
It comes after more than half of soft drinks sold in shops have had their sugar levels cut by manufacturers(制造商)so they can avoid paying the tax. Drinks now contain 45 million fewer kilos of sugar as a result of manufacturers efforts to avoid the charge, according to Treasury figures. Since April drinks companies have been forced to pay between 18p and 24p for every litre of sugary drink they produce or import, depending on the sugar content.
However, some high sugar brands, like Classic Coca Cola, have accepted the sugar tax and are refusing to change for fear of upsetting consumers. Fruit juices, milk-based drinks and most alcoholic drinks are free of the tax, as are small companies manufacturing fewer than 1m litres per year.
Todays figures, according to one government official, show the positive influence the sugar tax is having by raising millions of pounds for sports facilities(設(shè)施)and healthier eating in schools. Helping the next generation to have a healthy and active childhood is of great importance, and the industry is playing its part.
32. Why was the sugar tax introduced?
A. To collect money for schools. B. To improve the quality of drinks.
C. To protect childrens health. D. To encourage research in education.
33. How did some drinks companies respond to the sugar tax?
A. They turned to overseas markets. B. They raised the prices of their products.
C. They cut down on their production. D. They reduced their products sugar content.
34. From which of the following is the sugar tax collected?
A. Most alcoholic drinks. B. Milk-based drinks. C. Fruit juices. D. Classic Coke.
35. What can be inferred about the adoption of the sugar tax policy?
A. It is a short-sighted decision. B. It is a success story.
C. It benefits manufacturers. D. It upsets customers.

Young children across the globe enjoy playing games of hide and seek. For them, theres something highly exciting about 41 someone elses glance and making oneself unable to be seen.
However, we all witness that preschool children are remarkably 42 at hiding. They often cover only their eyes with their hands, leaving the rest of their bodies 43 .
For a long time, this ineffective hiding method was 44 as evidence that children are hopelessly "egocentric"(自我中心的)creatures. But our 45 research results in child developmental psychology 46 that idea.
We brought young children aged 2-4 into our Minds in Development Lab at USC. Each 47 sat down with an adult who covered her own eyes or 48 . We then asked the child if she could 49 or hear the adult. Surprisingly, children replied that they couldnt. The same 50 happened when the adult covered her own mouth: 51 children said that they couldnt 52 to her.
A number of 53 ruled out that the children misunderstood what they were being asked. The results were clear: Our young subjects 54 the questions and knew 55 what was asked of them. Their 56 to the questions reflected their true 57 that "I can see you only if you can see me, too." They simply 58 mutual(相互的)recognition and regard. Our 59 suggest when a child "hides" by putting a blanket over her head, it is not a result of egocentrism. In fact, children consider this method 60 when others use it.

A
It was a physical class. But it was nothing like previous ones — the class was “attended” by over 60 million students across China, and the teacher was not even on the planet: she was 340 kilometers above the earth.
“Hello, everyone. I’m Wang Yaping. I’ll host your lecture today.” Smiling to the camera, Wang, China’s second female astronaut, started her video class on June 20 on board the Tiangong-1 space station.
To show how Newton’s Laws work in space, Wang and her fellow astronauts used simple items like balls and spinning tops. The highlight of the lecture was when Wang made a film of water using a metal ring, something that only happens in zero gravity, where the surface tension(張力) of water is much higher than it is on the earth. She then took it a step further by pouring more water onto the film and turning it into a water ball, leaving the audience amazed by what they saw.
The 40-minute lesson seemed to have passed too quickly for students to see enough of those magical experiments. But sending stuff into space is really expensive. According to The Beijing Times, every kilogram launched into space cost 20,000 dollars. The experimental items taken this time were all strictly selected and weighed about 2.9 kilograms in total. This adds up to quite a large price tag.
The organizers of the event also had to consider the time of day: the communication signal between the earth and Tiangong-1 was best during that specific 40 minutes, when the spacecraft was flying within the coverage of all of the ground-based testing stations.
1. Why is the class different from a common one?
A. Because it took 40 minutes.
B. Because over 60 million students across the world attended it.
C. Because the teacher was on the planet.
D. Because the lecturer was in space.
2. One of the experiments shows .

Camilla is in critical but stable condition at this time and has a very long road ahead.”

If you put a buzzard(禿鷹)in a pen(圍欄) six to eight feet square and entirely open at the top, the bird, in spite of its ability to fly, will be a prisoner. The reason is that a buzzard always begins a flight from the ground with a run of ten to twelve feet. Without space to run, it will not even attempt to fly, but remain a prisoner for life in a small prison with no top.
The ordinary bat that flies around at night, a remarkably nimble creature in the air, cannot take off from a level place. If it is placed on the floor or flat ground, all it can do is to shuffle about helplessly and, no doubt, painfully, until it reaches some slight height from which it can throw itself into the air. Then, at once, it takes off like a flash.
A bumblebee (大黃蜂), if dropped into an open tumbler(平底玻璃杯), will be there until it dies, unless it is taken out. It never sees the means of escape at the top, but insists on trying to find some way out through the sides near the bottom. It will seek a way where none exists until it completely destroys itself.
In many ways, there are lots of people like the buzzard, the bat and the bumblebee. They are struggling about with all their problems and frustrations, not realizing that the answer is right there above them.
12. Why does a buzzard choose to stay in a pen?
A. Becaus e it is safe to live there.
B. Because it gets used to living there.
C. Because it cannot take off within an limited area.
D. Because it lost its ability to fly.
13. The underlined word in the second paragraph probably means “ .”
A. to run slowly B. to move slowly C. to pace slowly D. to fly slowly
14. A bumblebee will completely destroy itself for .
A. it does not look for a way out above B. it is dropped into an open cage
C. it does not try to find a way to escape D. it hurts itself while flying
15. In which way are many people similar to a buzzard, an ordinary bat and a bumblebee?
A. They are overcoming all their problems and frustrations.
B. They are all content with the things as they are.
C. They choose to give in to problems and frustrations.
D. They do not seek new ways to deal with difficulties.

We spend so much time waiting to be loved, hoping love will find us, and looking for that special love.Unfortunately, that’s not usually how life works. To be loved, you should love and respect yourself as much as you do others. In order to love someone, you should love yourself.
●Stop comparing yourself to others.16 We all have different gifts. When you compare yourself to others for what they have, whether it is a car, a house, or a job, it makes you feel bad about yourself. Really be grateful about everything you have. Gratitude keeps your heart open to love.
●Practice receiving love. To truly love is to be able to receive it. When someone loves you, does some kind deeds to you, or says kind words, accept it.17 Know that you are worthy of love. It is important to accept a gift of love by others. You give yourself a chance to learn more about yourself that you are lovable.18
● 19 Write about your experiences, good and bad. When you write down good experiences, allow yourself to feel those feelings. When you remember bad experiences, allow yourself to feel self-compassion. Compassion is not self-pity, but rather willingness to accept ones own pain and regret.
●Stop trying to be perfect. Stop blaming yourself for being less than perfect.20
Just follow all the steps above and dont let anyones expectations of you put any pressure on you.

第二節(jié)書面表達(dá)(滿分25分)
Possible Version
I often imagine what university I will enter next year. To be honest, I do hope I can go to Beijing University to learn economics which I’ve dreamed of since I was a child.
As a matter of fact, I haven’t completely put into my heart into all subjects such as maths, physics. I often want to play games and don’t listen to my teachers carefully in class.
As a saying goes “No pains , no gains.” I do know if I really want to realize my dream to the university, I have to work hard at all subjects. From now on, I am determined to make full use of my time, attending my class attentively, reading wildly, completing all the homework and doing sports to keep healthy. I believe, only by working hard at all subjects can I make my dream come true.
