Most people’s biggest job-hunting fear is being put on the spot by oddball interview questions such as these (which are real):

“Describe the color yellow to someone who’s blind.”

  – Spirit Airlines

“If you were asked to unload a 747 full of jelly beans, what would you do?”

  – Bose

“Who would win in a fight between Spiderman and Batman?”

  – Stanford University

Offbeat questions are nearly impossible to prepare for, and they don’t achieve the interviewer’s objective—to test out-of-the-box thinking and the ability to perform under pressure. That’s the bad news.

The good news is that companies are moving away from them. Recent research shows these questions do little more than boost the interviewer’s confidence. Even companies famous for oddball questions are abandoning them. In the words of Laszlo Bock, Google’s HR chief:

"If you’ve heard that Google likes to pose brain-teaser questions to candidates—like why manhole covers are round—your information is out of date. There’s no evidence that they suggest how people perform on the job."

Though these questions may be less exciting to prepare for than “Spiderman vs. Batman,” they are what you need to be ready for.

Most interviewees are only prepared for about 10 questions, so this list alone can give you a leg up. Study the list carefully and have answers ready—but not robotically rehearsed—so that you can speak comfortably, flexibly, and confidently about each of these topics.

  1.Tell me about yourself.

比如這個(gè)公司屬于汽車行業(yè),那么你就該回答:“Driving is my hobby. I really love the feeling of running on the road and I take cars as my best friends.”

2.What are your three greatest strengths?

回答這個(gè)問題時(shí)不可以只是簡(jiǎn)單回答:“I’mreally organized, punctual and get along well with others.” 像要應(yīng)聘金融行業(yè),可以說:“I think my three strongest strengths are details-oriental, patient and cautious.”但如果應(yīng)聘者是一個(gè)銷售精英,可以說:“I think my strongest strengths are aggressive, hard workingand communicative.”

3.What are your three greatest weaknesses?

比如:“I am a perfectionist and I pay very much attention to details. Sometimes I am quite captious.”

4.Why are you interested in working forour company?

建議不要以“It seemed like a career move.”或是“I havent been able to find anything else interesting.” 應(yīng)聘者可以這樣回答:“I read an article in the newspaper and was very impressed by ……”

5.Why did you leave your last job?

跳槽的原因可能是因?yàn)樯弦环莨ぷ鞣浅T愀,但面試并不是適合抱怨的場(chǎng)合,而且千萬不要對(duì)現(xiàn)有或是過去的雇主或同事進(jìn)行這樣的評(píng)論:“I didnt agree withthe companys direction.”“I got no recognition for my work.”“My boss was totally unreasonable.”鐵蕓建議,要從自身發(fā)展的角度出發(fā)來回答:“I love my last job and really learned a lotfromit, but I need a new platform and bigger space to make my career successful.”

6.If we hire you,how long will you stay with us?

老板想知道你會(huì)不會(huì)像離開上一份工作那樣很快也離開這家公司,你可以回答:“As long as my position here allows me to learn and to advance at a pace with my abilities.
