On a rainy day, about 150 volunteers worked for eight hours to clean up Carson Creek that is near a river. About nine tons of trash was taken out from there.

“We did a good job,” said Alan Specter, the organizer of the event. “We’re planning to come back here one more time, three years from now. Of course, we hope that there won’t be so much trash next time.”

The trash came in all shapes, sizes, a nd colors: cans, bottles, bicycles, batteries, furniture, clothing, plastic bags, dolls, and even a golf bag with a full set of golf clubs (球棒).

That day, it rained a little. All of them wore boots, gloves and raincoats. They did the work along a two-mile river with over 500 big yellow trash bags everywhere.

No one found anything that cost much. A five-year-old boy found an earring which he thought might be worth a million dollars. He said he’d sell it. Then he’d donate half of the money to Watch the Whales, and use the other half to buy his favorite ice cream every day.

Imagine the situation. You are driving along a desert or on a mountain. You have no idea where you are . You passed the last house two hours ago. Then your car breaks down. It is night and it is cold. You have no mobile phone. What do you do? Well, next time take a GPS with you. This invention may be able to help you. It is a device(裝置) which uses satellites (衛(wèi)星) to find the user’s position(位置). It can find your position to within 20 meters. A GPS cannot start your car, but at least you will know where you are.

GPS, which means Global Positioning System, is a small radio receiver. It looks like a mobile phone. You can hold it in your hand, or put in your pocket. It is sometimes put into a watch or a telephone. We also find GPS devices in cars, planes, or boats. Some of these devices have electronic maps, so you know where you are. For example, in a city they can tell you the name of the street.

There are three parts to the Global Positioning System. The first part is the receiver. You can hold it in your hand, or have it fixed into your car, plane, etc. The second part is a group of satellites orbiting(環(huán)繞) the Earth. The receiver contacts at least four of the satellites and calculates(計(jì)算) its position. The third part of the system is a network of ground stations. They are all over the world. They control the satellites and make sure they are working well.

Some people think that in the future the GPS will be as common as the mobile. They are becoming cheaper and more and more accurate(精確的). There are also new uses for the GPS. Perhaps they will become like watches. Everyone will have one and you will never be lost again.

  第II卷 主觀題部分

  IV. 任務(wù)型閱讀。(每小題2分,共8分)

  閱讀下面兩封信并回答問(wèn)題。

  Letter A

Young people are always told that they should make the most of their time, that they will never be as free again. So, my question is — why fill up all this free time with housework?Parents expect their children to get good grades, be good at sports, and be popular with other kids.

However, there is not enough time in the day to do these things and then do housework as well. It's not fair to expect teenagers to give up their precious time to do boring housework. Parents and children both have jobs. Parents' jobs are in the work-place. Their children's jobs are at school.

The only difference is that parents get paid and children don't. Parents say that they make their kids do housework to teach them responsibility. But this is just a trick. Parents trick their kids into doing housework because they are lazy.

  Yours,

  Overloaded

  Letter B

Both parents and children have jobs. The parents’ job is to go to work to earn money. The children’ s job is to go to school. But we all get hungry. Someone has to cook the meals and clean up afterward. We all wear clothes that get dirty. Someone has to wash them, iron them, and put them away. Children work from 9 until 4. Parents work from 8 until 6. Sure, after 4 o'clock, children have homework. But after 6, parents have homework too. They have to do the shopping, go t o the bank, pay the bills, and help their kids with their own homework!

I think it's only fair that teenagers help out a bit at home. They might not like it, but it's good for them.It teaches them how to look after themselves. This is really useful when they leave home to go to college or to live on their own.

  46. Who most probably wrote Letter B,a parent or a child?

  47. Why does Letter B say it’s good for teenagers to help out a bit at home?

  48. The two letters agree that parents and children both have jobs, don’t they?

Wang said only six or seven students in his class raise hands when a question is 55 . “I think it’s a problem that might affect(影響) our studies, but I am afraid to make 56 in front of my classmates,” he said.

Why didn’t the students raise 57 hands in class? Hu Wei, a teenager expert from Chinese Academy of Science gave his explanation to us. He said, “They lack confidence, or they are afraid of 58 faces because of giving wrong answers.

To encourage students to raise their hands in class, Hu suggests that teachers should try to guide and encourage students to offer their answers 59 repeating the question. Hu also advised students not to be shy, but brave enough to try. No matter whether your answer is right or wrong, being active in class can help you understand the information better.

Sun Pin, 16 of Fujian, always raises her hand as soon as she comes up with the answer, 60 if she isn’t sure she has gotten it right. She enjoys raising her hand a lot. “It keeps me enthusiastic (熱情) and confident to express my idea,” Sun said. “Raising my hand has really made me outstanding.
