It is all very well to blame traffic jams, the cost of petrol and the quick pace of modern life, but mannerson the roads are becoming horrible.Everybody knows that the nicest men become monsters behind the wheel.Itis all very well, again,to have a tiger in the tank, but to have one in the drivers seat is another matter altogether. You might tolerate the odd road-hog(莽撞駕車者),the rude and inconsiderate driver, but nowadays the well-mannered motorist is the exception to the rule.Perhaps the situation calls for a "Be Kind to Other Drivers"campaign, otherwise it may get completely out of hand.
Road politeness is not only good manners, but good sense too.It takes the most cool-headed and good-tempered of drivers to resist the temptation to revenge when subjected to uncivilized behavior. On the other hand,a little politeness goes a long way towards relieving the tensions of motoring.A friendly nod or a wave of acknowledgement in response to an act of politeness when they see it.
However, misplaced politeness can also be dangerous.Typical examples are the driver who brakes violently toallow a car to emerge from a side street at some hazard to following traffic, when a few seconds later the road would be clear anyway;or the man who waves a child across a zebra crossing into the path of oncoming vehicles that may be unable to stop in time. The same goes for encouraging old ladies to cross the road wherever and whenever they care to.It always amazes me that the highways are not covered with the dead bodiesof these grannies.
A veteran driver, whose manners are faultless, told me it would help if motorists learnt to filter correctlyinto traffic streams one at a time without causing the total blockages that give rise to bad temper.Unfortunately, modern motorists cant even learn to drive, let alone master the subtler aspects of roadsmanship.Years age the experts warned us that the car-ownership explosion would demand a lot more give-and-take from all road users. It is high fime for all of us to take this message to heart.
1.According to the passage, peoples behaviors on the roads are becoming_____________________.
2.What does the author suggest in order to get control of the situation?
3.Drivers who can manage to control their impulse to revenge when they experience impolite behavior are considered as_________________by the author.
4.Encouraging old ladies to cross the road at the wrong moment is referred as______________by the author.
5.Experts have long pointed out that all road users should be ready to yield to each other due to______________________.
答案:
1.[horrible]
[定位]根據(jù)題干中的behaviors on the roads定位到首段首句。
2.[A"Be Kind to Other Drivers"campaign.]
解析:原文中的get out of hand意為“失控”,與題干中的get control of“控制”剛好相反。
3.[the most cool-headed and good-tempered.]
解析:題干中的control their impulse to相當(dāng)于原文的resist the temptation to,experience impolite behavior也是原文subjected to uncivilized behavior的同義替換。
4.[misplaced politeness]
[定位]根據(jù)題干中的encouraging old ladies to cross the road定位到第3段。
原文該段倒數(shù)第二句中的The same goes for指的就是這種行為。
5.[the car-ownership explosion]
Years ago the experts warned對應(yīng)題干中的Experts have long pointed out,而be ready to yield toeach other是原文中demand a lot more give-and-take的同義替換,故原文該句that從句中的主語the car-ownership explosion部分即為答案。
Icebergs are among natures most spectacular creations, and yet most people have never seen one.A vague airof mystery envelops them. They come into being-somewhere-in faraway, frigid waters, and thunderous noise and splashing turbulence, which in most cases no one hears or sees. They exist only a short time and then slowly waste away just as unnoticed.
Objects of sheerest beauty, they have been called.Appearing in an endless variety of shapes, they may be dazzlingly white,or they may be glassy blue, green,or purple, tinted faintly of darker hues(顏色).They are graceful, stately(宏偉的),inspiring in calm, sunlit seas.
But they are also called frightening and dangerous, and that they are-in the night,in the fog,and in storms.Even in clear weather one is wise to stay a safe distance away from them. Most of their bulk is hidden below the water,so their underwater parts may extend out far beyond the visible top. Also, they may roll over unexpectedly, churning(劇烈攪動)the waters around them.
Icebergs are parts of glaciers that break off, drift into the water.float about awhile and finally melt.Icebergs afloat today are made of snowflakes that have fallen over long ages of time. They embody snows that drifted down hundred,or many thousand,or in some cases, maybe a million years ago.The snows fell in polar-regions and on cold mountains, where they melted only a little or not at all and so collected to great depthsover the years and centuries.
As each years snow accumulation lay on the surface, evaporation and melting caused the snowflakes slowly to lose their feathery points and become tiny grains of ice. When new snow fell on top of the old,it too turned into icy grains. So blankets of snow and ice grains mounted layer upon layer and were of such great thickness that the weight of the upper layers compressed the lower ones. With time and pressure from above, themany small ice grains joined and changed to larger crystals, and eventually the deeper crystals merged intoa solid mass of ice.
1.The author states that icebergs are rarely seen as they appear in_______________of the world.
2.From the passage,we can know that the shape of icebergs is___________________.
3.According to the passage, icebergs are scary and dangerous because they are likely to_______________________suprisingly.
4.What glaciers become when they break off and drift into the water?
5.What are the major factors in the process of the many small ice grains being merged into icebergs?
答案:
1.[faraway(distant/remote)waters(regions/areas)]
解析:題目中的appear in與of the world表明空格處需填入表地點的名詞。
2.[in an endless variety of shapes/various/different]
3.[roll over//turn over]
4.[Icebergs.]
解析:題目中的when從句是原文that定語從句的'部分內(nèi)容,原文句首的“Icebergs are parts of glaciers...”
5.[Time and pressure(from above).]
