Make for (Something) 前往/促成
1. = to move towards something or a place 前往
• Make for the hills, a tsunami is approaching! 快到丘陵那里去,海嘯就要來(lái)了!
• He made for his apartment a couple of hours ago. 他幾小時(shí)前就回公寓了。
2. = to contribute to, lead to or cause a result or situation. 促成
• Shakespeare's writing makes for a difficult read. 莎士比亞的作品很難懂。
• Both candidates are popular so it should make for an interesting election.
這兩位候選人都很受歡迎,這次選舉會(huì)非常有趣。
Make (somebody/something) into (somebody/something) 改變(或轉(zhuǎn)變)某人(或某物);把(某材料)做成(某物)
1. = to convert one thing into another thing 把...變?yōu)?/p>
• His parents made his bedroom into a billiards room once he moved out. 一旦他搬出去,他的父母就會(huì)把他的臥室變?yōu)榕_(tái)球室。
• His father said that joining the army would make him into a real man, but he was wrong.
他父親說(shuō)參軍會(huì)讓他變?yōu)橐粋(gè)真正的男子漢,但他錯(cuò)了。
Make (something) out 看出;聽(tīng)出/填寫
1. = to just be able to hear, read or see something (費(fèi)力地) 看出; 聽(tīng)出;讀出
• He spoke so quietly we could hardly make out what he was saying.
他的聲音很小,我們很難聽(tīng)出他在說(shuō)什么。
• If you can make out the billboard from such a distance you really have excellent vision.

2. = to fill out the details of a document (usually a check) 填寫
• You can make out the cheque to Woodward Ltd. 你可以給Woodward Ltd寫張支票。
Make (something) out to be 聲稱,斷言
1. = to claim; to assert
• He makes himself out to be an important artist but his paintings are utter garbage.
他聲稱自己是一位偉大的藝術(shù)家,但他的作品一文不值。
• I think the critics make that movie out to be more profound than it really is.
我認(rèn)為評(píng)論家聲稱這部電影比它的自身更為有影響力。
Make of 理解/從某事物中得出觀點(diǎn)
1. = to try to understand and find a reason for something 理解
• I don't know what to make of her suddenly unfriendly attitude towards me. 我不知道要怎么理解她突然不友善的態(tài)度。
• Can you make anything of these ruins? 你能從這些遺跡中發(fā)現(xiàn)什么嗎?
2. = to think and have an opinion about something 從某事物中得出觀點(diǎn)
• What do you make of the new policy the president signed? 你認(rèn)為總統(tǒng)簽署的新政策代表著什么?
Make off (常指為逃離而) 盡快離開(kāi)
1. = To hurry away, especially in order to escape
• The thieves had to make off in their car when the police arrived. 警察趕到時(shí),小偷已經(jīng)棄車而逃。
• The pop star made off from the concert before the fans could find him. 在粉絲發(fā)現(xiàn)他前,這位流行歌手就已經(jīng)匆匆離開(kāi)了。
Make off with 偷走
1. = To steal something and (quickly) take it away.
• The looters made off with all the laptops that were in the computer store.
搶劫者偷走了電腦商場(chǎng)里的所有筆記本。
Make (somebody) out 理解某人的性格
1. = To understand a person's character
• Since she is normally quiet and reserved it is hard to make her out.
她通常很安靜,而且有所保留,因此很難知道她是怎樣的人。
Make (something) over to (somebody) 轉(zhuǎn)讓
1. = Transfer ownership
• The government of Mugabe made all the lands of the whites over to black African farmers.
穆加比政府將所有白人的土地轉(zhuǎn)讓給了非洲農(nóng)民。
Make up
1. = the composition of something 構(gòu)成
• The committee was made up of all the regional managers. 委員會(huì)由所有的區(qū)域經(jīng)理組成。
2. = combination of qualities that form a part of someone's character 性格
• Flexibility and integrity are key elements of her make up. 她主要的特點(diǎn)是靈活性和一體性。
3. = to apply make up, rouge, powder, eyeliner, etc. Also to make somebody up 化妝
• The actors must make themselves up before going on stage. 演員上臺(tái)前一定要化妝。
4. = to invent a story, usually to deceive or entertain 編故事
• My four year old niece is always making up stories, last week she told me that she and her friends flew to the moon.
我四歲的侄女經(jīng)常編故事,上周她告訴我她和她的朋友飛到了月球。
5. = To form or constitute something 組成
• The class is made up of three sections of conversation and two sections of written exercises.
這堂課由三部分組成:一部分是對(duì)話,其余兩部分是寫作練習(xí)。
6. = a required number or an amount to complete something 補(bǔ)足 (某數(shù)量)
• We need two more people to make up a football team. 我們還需要兩個(gè)人才能組成一個(gè)足球隊(duì)。
7. = To prepare a bed (or something) for use 鋪 (床)
• The room is tidy, I just have to make up the bed for you. 房間很干凈,你只要鋪一下床就可以住了。
8. = To put something together from many different things 配制 (食物、藥等)
• Let's make up an Easter basket for your nephew. 讓我們來(lái)給你侄子做個(gè)復(fù)活節(jié)花籃吧。
9. = To become friendly with someone again, usually after an argument or fight. 和好
• After three years without talking to each other, they finally made up. 他們?nèi)隂](méi)說(shuō)過(guò)話,現(xiàn)在終于和好了。
Make up for 補(bǔ)償
1. = the compensate for something; to replace something lost
• I know I ruined your favourite dress but I hope this new one I bought you makes up for it.
我知道我弄壞了你最喜歡的裙子,希望這條新的可以補(bǔ)償你。
• What she lacked in experience, she made up for in the way she learns quickly.
她的快速學(xué)習(xí)能力彌補(bǔ)了她缺乏經(jīng)驗(yàn)的不足。
