高中期末英語(yǔ)閱讀理解 體育專(zhuān)題一
Held each March, the NCAA men’s basketball tournament (錦標(biāo)賽) wraps up the U.S. college basketball season. The tournament creates such a frenzy (瘋狂) that it’s referred to as “March Madness.” Since its start in 1939, March Madness has built a rich legacy, complete with fabled (傳說(shuō)中的) team dynasties, determined underdogs and heart-stopping finishes.
Of the more than 300 NCAA Division I men’s basketball teams in the U.S., the 64 best are selected to play in the tournament. Careful decisions are then made to divide the 64 teams into four regions, which are evenly matched groups in terms of strength. Tournament games are played around the country at certain venues (比賽場(chǎng)館), and teams are eliminated as soon as they lose. The last four teams, named “The Final Four,” play in the last three games. Those games, which take place in April, are the most-watched as they determine the NCAA champion.
Every year, the tournament features most of America’s best college basketball players. For this reason, the games are attended not only by basketball fans but also by scouts who work for professional basketball teams. The scouts’ tasks are to evaluate the players and help decide which ones their professional teams will try to recruit (招募). After the tournament ends, many college players are offered contracts to play for professional teams. Some of these young men, attracted by million-dollar offers, choose to leave college before they graduate to play professionally. Other players decide to stay in college and get their degrees first before joining the professional ranks. For all of these players, college basketball is an important step toward fulfilling their dream of playing for a professional team in the U.S. or another country.

For the past 30 years, John Madden has given a voice to football’s rough (劇烈的) spirit. On April 16, Madden announced his retirement from broadcasting. Fans of the former Oakland Raiders football coach and colorful commentator (解說(shuō)員) will never forget his fun-loving manner and distinctive voice.
Madden was born in Minnesota and grew up in Northern California. As a young boy, he played several sports. Madden remembers taping together broken bats (棒球球棒) from a local baseball team to use for batting practice. One of his first jobs was as a caddy (球童). He played football at the University of Oregon. Madden was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles in 1958, but he suffered a career-ending knee injury during training camp.
Madden got his first coaching job in 1960. He served as head coach of the Oakland Raiders from 1969-1978. During that time, the Raiders never had a losing season, and won their division seven times and the Super Bowl (美國(guó)橄欖球超級(jí)杯賽) in 1977. Famous for his wild sideline gestures and unruly hair, Madden was admitted into the Hall of Fame.
Madden retired from coaching after the 1978 season. He wrote a best-selling book in 1984, titled Hey, Wait a Minute (I wrote a book!). In 1979, Madden took a position as a commentator for CBS. He immediately found success. Over the course of his career, Madden covered football for CBS, Fox and ABC, winning 16 Emmy Awards. In 1988, Madden lent his name to the Electronic Arts video game John Madden Football. It has sold over 70 million copies.
He says he is retiring because he wants to spend more time with his family, not because he stopped having fun. “I enjoyed the game and the players and the coaches and the film and the travel and everything,” Madden says.
