The Bear and the Two Travelers朋友與熊
TWO MEN were traveling together, when a Bear suddenly met them on their path. One of them climbed up quickly into a tree and concealed himself in the branches. The other, seeing that he must be a ttacked, fell flat on the ground, and when the Bear came up and felt him with his snout, and smelt him all over, he held his breath, and feigned the appearance of death as much as he could.The Bear soon left him, for it is said he will not touch a dead body. When he was quite gone, the other Traveler descended from the tree, and jocularly inquired of his friend what it was the Bear had whispered in his ear. "He gave me this advice," his companion replied. "Never travel with a friend who deserts you at the approach of danger."
Misfortune tests the sincerity of friends.
兩個(gè)平常非常要好的朋友一道上路。途中，突然遇到一頭大熊，其中的一個(gè)立即閃電般 地?fù)屜扰郎狭藰�，躲了起來，而另一個(gè)眼見逃生無望，便靈機(jī)一動(dòng)馬上躺倒在地上，緊緊地 屏住呼吸，假裝死了。據(jù)說，熊從來不吃死人。熊走到他跟前，用鼻子在他臉上嗅了嗅，轉(zhuǎn) 身就走了。躲在樹上的人下來后，問熊在他耳邊說了些什么。那人委婉地回答說：“熊告訴 我，今后千萬注意，別和那些不能共患難的朋友一起同行。”
這故事說明，不能共患難的人不是真正的朋友。
The Oxen and the Axle-Trees公牛與車軸
A HEAVY WAGON was being dragged along a country lane by a
team of Oxen. The Axle-trees groaned and creaked terribly;
whereupon the Oxen, turning round, thus addressed the wheels:
"Hullo there! why do you make so much noise? We bear all the
labor, and we, not you, ought to cry out."
Those who suffer most cry out the least.
幾頭公牛正使勁拉著貨車行走，車軸被壓得發(fā)出吱吱的響聲，�；剡^頭，不耐煩地對車 軸說道：“喂，朋友，我們無聲無息負(fù)擔(dān)著全部重量，你叫喚什么?”
這故事是說，那些叫喚得特別響的人往往干活少，而那些不作聲的人往往承擔(dān)著全部重量。
The Tortoise and the Eagle烏龜與鷹
A TORTOISE, lazily basking in the sun, complained to the
sea-birds of her hard fate, that no one would teach her to fly.
An Eagle, hovering near, heard her lamentation and demanded what
reward she would give him if he would take her aloft and float
her in the air. "I will give you," she said, "all the riches of the Red
Sea ." "I will teach you to fly then," said the Eagle; and taking her
up in his talons he carried her almost to the clouds suddenly he let
her go, and she fell on a lofty mountain, dashing her shell to pieces
. The Tortoise exclaimed in the moment of death: "I have deserved
my present fate; for what had I to do with wings and clouds, who
can with difficulty move about on the earth?'
If men had all they wished, they would be often ruined.
烏龜看見鷹在空中飛翔，便請求鷹教他飛行。鷹勸告他，說他不能飛行�？蔀觚斣偃龖� 求，鷹便抓住他，飛到高空，然后將他松開。烏龜落在巖石上，被摔得粉身碎骨。
這故事說明，那些好高鶩遠(yuǎn)，不切實(shí)際的人必將失敗。
The Flies and the Honey-Pot蒼蠅與蜜
A NUMBER of Flies were attracted to a jar of honey which had
been overturned in a housekeeper's room, and placing their feet in
it, ate greedily. Their feet, however, became so smeared with the
honey that they could not use their wings, nor release themselves,
and were suffocated. Just as they were expiring, they exclaimed,
"O foolish creatures that we are, for the sake of a little pleasure we
have destroyed ourselves."
Pleasure bought with pains, hurts.
房里有蜜漏流出來，許多蒼蠅便飛去飽餐起來。蜂蜜太甜美了，他們舍不得走。然而， 就在這時(shí)他們的腳被蜜粘住，再也飛不起來了。他們后悔不已，嗡嗡亂叫：“我們真不幸， 因貪圖一時(shí)的享受而喪了命。”
對于許多人來說，貪婪是許多災(zāi)禍的根源。
